Ocean County, New Jersey In my crawl space there is a porcelain light fixture with a pull chain. Also wired to this right on the metal fixture box is a Nutone transformer of some sort. I am not sure what it does. My plan was to have the fixture with the pull chain turn all 3 of the fixtures on and off. I wired it up and flipped the breaker and. But, the pull chain doesn’t shut all of the fixtures off, just the one that it is built in to. All of these fixtures do not require a ground wire very strange, why? The ground wire from the romex that is supplying the power is just laying in the fixture box. What I am hoping to do is add a light switch to the setup.

Supplies Gather your supplies. For the sake of this build we are going to assume you have a 30 amp plug on your generator – like the one shown. If your have one different please adjust your supplies. Buy a UL rated device that fits your specific breaker box. These have been tested and validated to work. Many insurance companies and jurisdictions require the UL rating.
By connecting the flying lead to an earth ground reference and touching the screwdriver tip to various points in the circuit, the presence or absence of voltage at each point can be determined, allowing simple faults to be detected and traced to their root cause.
The essence of the wiring configuration is for one hot feed wire entering the switch box to be split so that it feeds both switches, which in turn feed hot wires in cables that lead out to two separate light fixtures. However, the actual look of the wiring in the box can vary, depending on where the switches are located along the circuit run.
Two wall switches mounted in the same wall box can control two light fixtures fed by the same circuit. This overview describes in very basic terms what the wiring looks like in the simplest installation — where the circuit cable first reaches the switch box, then feeds out from there to separate light fixtures “downstream” from the switch box.
The assumption here is that a circuit is being extended from an existing source, such as a receptacle outlet, to feed a double switch that will control two different light fixtures Step 1 Shut Off the Power to the Circuit credit: Bryan Trandem Use a circuit tester to verify that the power is off to the circuit you are working on. Turn off the power to the circuit you’ll be working on by flipping the reset lever on the circuit breaker to the OFF position at the main service panel.
Check to make sure power is off by using a circuit tester. If you are using a non-contact tester, make sure it is operating correctly by first testing it on an outlet you know is live. When you are sure it’s functioning correctly, test the receptacle outlet where you’ll be extending the circuit to make sure the power is off.

Planning the project Say you need a bright yard light way out in your yard or a remote outlet to power a pond pump or electric tools. All it takes is a little electrical moxie and a willingness to dig a shallow trench. In this article, we show the easiest, quickest and cheapest method to safely run electricity outdoors. Our method involves directly burying UF underground feeder plastic shielded cable 12 in.
For this project, you should have the fundamental wiring skills it takes to make proper connections and the basic electrical and carpentry tools.
Unlike tong ammeters which sense changing magnetic fields, these detectors can be used even if no current is flowing through the wire in question, because they sense the alternating electric field radiating from the AC voltage on the conductor.
If the circuit breakers aren’t labeled, you can locate the proper switch by plugging a radio into the outlet you plan to change. Turn off the switches until the radio goes off. Then place a piece of tape over the switch to make sure no one accidentally turns it back on while you’re working on the outlet. Step 2 Remove the Cover Plate and Test the Power Remove the outlet cover plate and the screws holding the outlet in place. Test the outlet with the circuit tester to be sure the power is off.

A brand new GFI comes from the factory in a tripped state and cannot be reset till it is hooked up right and power turned on. They are under the impression that the outlets there are not already protected. This may not be true.
First — uch, back-stabbed outlets.
Lighting showrooms and catalogs have a wide variety of fixtures to tempt you. And even though the bag of parts included with some fixtures may look daunting, the electrical connections are simple enough for even a beginner. But poor installation techniques can result in a potentially lethal shock or fire. The temperature rating of your existing wires will affect which type of fixture you can install. Remove the old fixture and inspect the wiring Photo 1: Remove the fixture Turn off the power to the light fixture at the main circuit panel.
Remove the nut or screws securing the dome-shaped canopy and lower it. Then remove the screws securing the crossbar to the electrical box and lower the fixture. Make sure the power is off Test the wires to make sure the power is off. Move the tip of a non-contact voltage detector near each wire to make sure the power to all wires in the box is turned off make sure the light switch is turned on. If the tester lights, switch off circuit breakers or loosen fuses one at a time until the tester light goes off.
Disconnect the wires from the light fixture. Leave other wires connected and tucked into the electrical box. Fixtures with this label generate enough heat to damage the insulation on older wires and cause a fire hazard.
How to Fix a Dusk to Dawn Light Fixture
Antique tandem and parallel receptacle. This plug can fit both our parallel style plugs and Tandem plugs. The parallel style plugs are the type we use today. The un-grounded type like you would find on a lamp can still operate in an outlet like this. The Tandem style plug has two horizontal flat blades. They fell out of favor in the early part of this century.
Run circuit extension cables from the new switch box to the light fixture locations; strip the sheathing as needed, and insert them into the wall box, as shown in this tabletop example.

But it brought up some questions, and a bit of anxiety. First — uch, back-stabbed outlets. That meant having to cut and strip already somewhat-short wires. Advertisement The first outlet was a little tricky.
Yup, the hot and neutral wires were indeed reversed, and the outlet was also connected via back-stab. The ground wire was a little corroded in some part maybe, or just dirty. Then again, some of the outlet boxes are a little crooked, exaggerating the effects. Then I tackled the outlet that used to be switch-controlled. There were 5 wires going to one receptacle.
The bridges between top and bottom were NOT broken. Some Context, if it helps: This is in the living room.

I tried grounding the switch to the fixture box but that didn’t work either.
Two-contact test lights[ edit ] A voltage tester with three lamps to give an approximate indication of voltage magnitude The test light is an electric lamp connected with one or two insulated wire leads. By connecting the flying lead to an earth ground reference and touching the screwdriver tip to various points in the circuit, the presence or absence of voltage at each point can be determined, allowing simple faults to be detected and traced to their root cause.
For higher voltages, a statiscope consisting of a neon glow tube mounted on a long insulating handle can be used to detect AC voltages of volts or more. For low voltage work for example, in automobiles , the lamp used is usually a small, low-voltage incandescent light bulb. These lamps usually are designed to operate on approximately 12 V; application of an automotive test lamp on mains voltage will destroy the lamp and may cause a short-circuit fault in the tester.
For line voltage mains work, the lamp is usually a small neon lamp connected in series with an appropriate ballast resistor.
